Undisturbed, the Mermaid sleeps. Waves gently lapping the cool
morning beach. New morning sun, rising
with the tide. Soon she
will bathe in deep waters, where magical creatures play.
"My inspiration for The Mermaid came when my wife and I were shelling on the Naples beach.
We came upon the pilings. I climbed on top of one, and photographed two pilings from an elevated viewpoint. My wife posed
for a photo on the sand so I could get the proper position of the mermaid. I also photographed one of the shells we found,
and the surf where the waves were breaking on the seashore. I used all four photos for reference, painting the background
with watercolor and the mermaid with acrylic. The top of the piling on the left turned out to be quite challenging to paint."
